A Fresh Perspective on Repentance

Received February 2024

While praying for this year, I saw the Lord holding out a big, soapy, bubbly sponge to His people in an invitation to repentance.

With this, I saw a picture of my husband cleaning our car with our sons. They use a big sponge like God was holding in the picture and there’s a sense of joy and a job well done. My sons love washing the car with their father. There are bubbles everywhere and soon the car is sparkling.

Today, God is inviting you into a place of repentance, of cleansing and washing that will be a joy and a relief.

He does not want you to strive to get yourself clean; it’s not your own doing, but it’s a place of freedom that allows Him to point to the dirt and you partner with Him to clean it off by repentance. You don’t have to conjure it up and think of every sin you’ve done, He will point it out.

He says, “See this spot, son/daughter. Scrub here.”

This is not to make light of repentance; there is a place for godly grief in light of our sinfulness. Our sin, and the cleansing of it, are serious life-transforming things. We’re meant to feel the weight of them. But I feel God is saying, “Don’t let the weight of repentance hold you back from doing it in the first place.” Sometimes the weight of it can keep us from doing it at all.

He says, “Start here.” Sponge in hand. An invitation.

I feel this is key for some of you to really shine in your personal ministry. To shine because He shines through you more clearly. His desire is for you to be as clean and pure as possible. Even a small speck of dust can dull the shine. Bring it to Him.

God wants to make repentance a habit in your life. He wants to make it a joy. You will feel the relief!

What is God showing you to repent of today so that you can move forward fresh and clean? Then again tomorrow? And again the day after that?

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” -1 John 1:9
